I just came across my old CD collection today that I haven't seen since I packed them away 3 years ago, and I'm currently in the midst of a wave of nostalgia because of it. Since I mostly collect MP3's nowadays, I'm a little amazed by how meaningful and fun putting this collection together was for me as a teenager, especially since I had to specially order some of these (the soundtracks for The Breakfast Club and The Lost Boys were gifts from my older sister, who equally understood the powerful hold these hard-to-find albums entailed). But the most beloved gems from the stack had to be the soundtracks performed by Tangerine Dream for the films Firestarter and Near Dark; not only were they the hardest to find, but I could literally leave them on repeat for the entire day and I would be in lost in proverbial heaven. Anyone who knows 80s films well should be familiar with this band since they seemed to dominant the soundtrack of every memorable or cult classic film from that decade (who can really forget the train scene from Risky Business? I know it wasn't just Tom Crusie and Rebecca De Mornay who made that scene iconic). Tangerine Dream's music was more than music, it was something higher and esoteric, giving these films a mysterious and otherworldly feel to them. It's a shame movies nowadays lack this quality, and I do hope that we can eventually get another great soundtrack that resonates Tangerine Dream.
Here is some of their best tracks in my opinion for your listening pleasure.
Risky Business (1983)
Firestarter (1984)
Wavelength (1983)
Three O'Clock High (1987)
Legend (1985)
